Berland, finally recognising the pain of losing a loved one, allows Frost to arrest him in peace. Frost feels sorry for him however and concludes that he can't be the person they're after.
Compton is killed in a house fire, Frost quickly has a prime suspect. There is quite an array of characters, all of them likeable in some way, even Supt. Meanwhile, a local power station worker, Cocroft, is burgled. Sue resents him as an interloper interested only her sister's money. Their first case is that of a woman, eventually identified as Sylvia Carter, whose remains are found on the railroad tracks after being run over by several trains. Frost has some guilt, but carries it around silently.
