If you love anime, and in particular if you love Berserk, please buy this series so that Miura and studio C4 are able to continue the series. We see see heroes raised up and lauded, and granted noble. The look of the Berserk world changes significantly near the end of the Golden Age arc, and that jump is handled well. Acknowledging Gut's skill, Griffith attempts to recruit him to the band but fails to do so. We want things desperately to get better, but we know how slim the prospects for that are.
The Band of the Hawks are wanted fugitives by the Kingdom of Midland and they still don't know why. However, if the previous volumes were at least watchable then definitely try this out. We find, as we watch, that he is not as cold-hearted as we were initially led to believe. Everybody being transported to the sacrificial grounds and the Godhand's intro is the best kind of spooky. The character development is quite better and one will have more of an understanding of Griffith and Caska. The original was a product of a darker era in anime that I don't think can be easily replicated through a remake.
I was very pleasently surprised that this was included, as even the 90s anime left it out. One year has passed since their escape, with Griffith still in Midland's custody and Caska taking up leadership. And I, personally, am a fan of the films' soundtracks and voice acting, even if they don't quite measure up to the high standards set by the 1997 anime. As a viewer, we desire to see despicable acts punished. After some brief backstory about what's taken place since the last movie, the camp is attacked by mercenaries working for the King of Midland. It is not until Griffith bests Guts in a one-on-one duel, that Guts reluctantly consents to joining. I applaud the characters and the story, and I respect Berserk for having the courage to go all-out with its subject matter.
This is one area where the animation team should have used discretion, and simply animated things by hand. It is a bloodbath, but it's one that feels right. I had to fight back tears when Casca told Guts not to look. But I do wholeheartedly agree with you on one point: the 3D animation was absolutely atrocious. The music for the most part was fantastic, other than some inappropriate violin music during a few otherwise serious scenes that takes away from the tone. I have to admit that the new additions make up for a lot of these things.
It took so long for us fans to get this reboot to happen, I would hate for the opportunity to be squandered. The answer for me is still no. It is powerfully moving, but difficult to watch -- and for this purpose, I consider it a success of the film medium. I like that it embraces its own violence and sexual themes. In time, Griffith's gradual rise in status is ill-received by the noblemen, and a failed assassination attempt by the king's brother Julius results in his murder by Guts, who was also forced to kill the noble's son Adonis to leave no witnesses. In any case, this volume is still better than previous volumes.
In fact, the ending is far better this time providing a lot more very necessary closure that the original was lacking. In any case, I think older fans should skip this volume if they totally hated the first two, and I'm talking if they found no enjoyment in those at all. Nor has it particularly improved.
The previous volume felt quite mad cap at times, with things simply happening just because. De vieilles blessures sont ouvertes. Remaining minutes are used to cram in as much violence and bloodshed as is possible -- which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The only thing I will say is that it's extremely graphic, much more so than the 90s anime, and not for the light hearted. Many of them I understand, since there are time constraints, but I was very disappointed that many of the tender moments between Guts and Casca were left out. The Band of the Hawks is plotting a rescue mission to save Griffith who is confined to prison. There isn't much closure, but somehow that feels appropriate.
A lot of the particularly hellish imagery, which was rendered as a still backgrounds in the original anime series, has a lot more life here. There is little left up to the imagination with various slashes and stabbings. The plot follows The Hawks after they're brutally attacked and Guts appears to save them. Told that his tribulations have been leading to this moment, Griffith accepts becoming the final member of the God Hand to achieve his dream while knowing his transition requires his allies being offered as branded sacrifices. Following this scene of torture, is an exaggerated scene of revenge. Griffith is in prison having some trippy visions, clearly in bad shape.
Themes of love, comradery, loyalty, betrayal, sacrifice, and friendship are all explored. The action is still as barbaric as before capturing the brutality of this world. The animation here is once again, absolutely spectacular. Much more of the film is done in 2D, and it benefits greatly from it, especially when it comes to conveying the strong and disturbing emotions of this part of the story.
That is, they all look exactly the same. It seems to end somewhat prematurely, but w hen one accepts that Egg of the Supreme Ruler is only meant as the introduction of the trilogy, and that the three films will make up one cohesive unit -- that is, they are not episodic -- one can appreciate the movie for what it contains, instead of what it lacks. One comment I'll make now is that I really like the cover art. When the Hawks are first transported to Hell, the scene is balancing on the edge of a knife, and once the brand goes out it tips over the edge into pure chaos. And what material it is.
