The steering is direct and the suspension is well-tuned for day-to-day commuting. However, the revised inline four-cylinder engine now includes variable valve timing. Looking to capitalize on this trend, Chevrolet is promoting its 34 mpg Aveo sedan, as well as the redesigned 2009 Aveo5 hatchback that is already the brand's best-selling model in Europe. It's not hard to understand why: the extra door gives them the edge in versatility over their sedan counterparts. It's also fairly decent going off twisty highway exit ramps. There's not much oomph with the manual, either, but at least you get to decide when it kicks in.
There were some faux aluminum trim pieces that I thought were quite good for this price range, and I've never been bothered by not having soft-touch surfaces. The cabin has five seat belts, but after putting some miles on several Aveo models, one can plan on using four of them without too much complaining from the second row; seating three in the back would is tight. Finally, while not a fault in my book, it is worth noting that the cabin lets in a lot of ambient noise. Given that the Aveo5 only makes 106 horsepower, you'll want to be able to grab a lower gear at will to merge or pass on the highway. The second thing that bugged me was the lack of storage cubbies. Split-folding rear seatbacks help increase space. There is no traction or stability control on offer.
