Mary returns to Carmichael's side aboard the ship as it prepares to set sail. Wayne plays a Montana cattleman who is lured into a San Francisco gambling joint by dance-hall girl Dvorak. When Chamalis finds out, he threatens to destroy Cobb's printing press and burn down the building, but is halted by Swan. The 1906 quake destroys his place. Because of fog the ship will not leave for a few days.
In an early, uncredited appearance, can be spotted playing a drunken sailor being thrown out of a bar. When it begins to rain heavily, she seeks refuge in a seemingly abandoned cabin, where she meets poet and gold miner Jim Carmichael McCrea. They have trouble seeing in the fog, but can hear Chamalis pursuing them. The sheriff arrives with a mob, and Chamalis allows himself to be taken away. She helps him win a large sum of money at the gambling tables, but he then loses it to a card cheat, Schildkraut. After he makes a fortune he opens his own place with Flaxen as the entertainer. Dying, Cobb orders his assistant to print the truth.
The Chicago condemned Barbary Coast. His eloquent speech impresses Chamalis, who hires him on the spot as a waiter. Carmichael decides to return to New York. The earth may soon be moving for him in quite dramatic ways. Chamalis gives her the name 'Swan' and she becomes his female escort. He gives her his book of poems as a memento.

A cattle rancher falls for a San Francisco saloon-bar singer, but she proves to be in cahoots with a ruthless card sharp who wins all his money. Though he heads home after losing the money to Morell's card-sharping, Duke takes a crash course on card play and returns with all his savings ready to take on Morell and start up his own place. Devastated by Cobb's death, Mary acknowledges her love for Carmichael, and works the roulette table so that he wins back the gold he previously lost.
